Alternative transportation increasingly popular on, off campus

Yet, increased use of bikes and scooters brings safety issues.

"I had it (scooter) knocked over one night, which busted a fender and a mirror," Webster said. "Also, drivers tend to not notice you at times, so you always have to be vigilant, especially around the campus."

"I do know that with increased bike use comes increased vandalism and theft, but the police department will (help with) … your bike for tracking," Minor said.

VCU Police Cpl. Lauren Sledzinksi said the campus police registration system helps students effectively recover lost bikes.

Sledzinski said students fill out a form to register the serial number into the Virginia Criminal Information Network, which tracks crimes statewide.

"So if the bike is ever stolen, we can go into the network," Sledzinksi said. "It helps recover their bikes."

Sledzinki suggested tips for securing bikes.

"We generally ask that you buy a good lock, and a lot of people don't know that if you register with us, you can go to the bookstore and get a discount on a U-lock," she said.
