My dad is addicted to coke.
The noises wake me in the night and I look at the clock. Its 2 a.m. I hear him - swinging open cabinets, slamming them shut, pushing the bottles around on the shelves. I know what he's doing - he's looking for it.
I glance to my cracked open door and see the reflection outside of my room on the wooden floor.

My best friend goes to a known party school; Princeton Review ranked it as number 15 on the list. Her freshman year consisted of random nights and lonely mornings. But it was only recently that I got a call from Down South about how she was currently in a monogamous relationship in the middle of her sophomore year.

The Nov. 11 op-ed by William Haun that appeared in The Eagle denouncing Bon Appetit for participating in peta2's vegetarian-friendly campus contest was conveyed as an expression of concern with regards to AU's decision-making. In reality, it was little more than a quasi-concealed attempt at vilifying vegetarianism and animal rights in general.

Thumbs Up
Mid-year Room Changes
That's it, you're fed up. Your roommate is a jerk/whore/nasty individual who has no respect for your studies/privacy/existence, and it is time for you to amicably depart/punch them/burn their things (underline all that apply).

In reference to your recent coverage, I wanted to let you know that on October 24, Lane Company alerted Goucher College that it had declined the college's request for a long-term student housing relationship with Lane. We have gone out of our way to cooperate with the college during its student housing crunch, but the situation has become untenable.

When the novelty of a young black man in the White House wears off, there will be nothing left but bad politics. And don't even think of calling me a racist.

The 2008 election will be remembered mainly for the boundaries that fell this year and the signs that some of America's most pernicious divisions are slowly fading.

Dear President-Elect Obama: Congratulations on your historic election to the nation's highest office. You ran a very effective campaign, and the people have spoken by choosing you as their commander-in-chief for the next four years. I trust you do not take this responsibility lightly.

I'm not so thankful to the people who decided on this year's Thanksgiving break.
I'm sick of getting such a short Thanksgiving break. We've been at school for three months. We're tired and bogged down with work. A week off before the stretch run of the semester would do wonders, but instead the break, which covers just two weekdays, is just an added stress as people scramble to figure out how they'll get home in time to cut the turkey and see all the relatives they hate.

Ladies, listen up: I know it's not your fault, but some people aren't meant to wear booty shorts.
Nice guy looking to settle. Any ladies done with their one night encounters?
It's not OK that you hit a girl and got away with it, which is why I peed in a cup and poured it all over your apartment door.

The city of Newark is getting rid of Main Street's last wooded lot in order to build a new commercial and apartment complex. The lot, located next to Bing's Bakery, had been zoned for building, but the city was waiting to find the right building to put there.

On the night of Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, LGBT Americans and their supporters had a bittersweet feeling. For the first time in eight years, there would be an ally in the White House by the name of Barack Obama. But for the first time in 4 years, there were sweeping anti-gay bans which passed in California, Arkansas, Arizona and Florida.

I will admit it. I'm 22 years old and I'm more excited about Twilight than I am about graduation. There's no shame in it, I swear.
The film version of Stephenie Meyer's smash debut novel will hit theaters this Friday to a flurry of anticipation. Hundreds of thousands of tweens and teens-and yes, even "adults" like me-will be standing in lines across the country.

On Sept. 29, 2006, James Madison University's cross country squad toed the starting line of the eight kilometer course at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. The men placed 14th - a respectable finish in the field of 42 teams - and senior C.W. Moran crossed the line fourth, in front of 272 other athletes.

According to the Dining Advisor Board members, Aramark is considering a switch between two of their franchised food choices: Chick-Fil-A and Subway.
The plan is to move Subway to where Montague's Deli stands and then move Chick-Fil-A to South Side and then bring something to fill Chick-Fil-A's spot, possibly an expansion of the Grille, which currently serves burgers and cheesesteaks.

My musical inclination is limited to my four years of piano lessons and recitals. My parents had big dreams, but sadly I did not-and I decided it was much more important to watch Saturday morning television than learn how to play "Chopin." My passion for music dwindled to me trying half-heartedly to play my old guitar-then, something big and astounding happened that brought it all back: Rock Band.

There are a number of disturbing inaccuracies in a recent op-ed ("AU wrong to promote PETA and 'vegetarian lifestyle,'" Nov. 10). First, the author should know that no one is "shoving anything down his throat," least of all "far left ideology." Animal advocates come from across the political spectrum; the organization I'm interning for this semester, the Humane Society Legislative Fund, endorses Democratic and Republican candidates for political office based solely on their stances on animal issues.

Stop. What are you doing? Reading the paper. But what else? Facebook? Homework? Music? On the phone with a friend? If all you're doing right now is absorbing this article, you aren't being productive. Or at least it's tempting to think that way. Every student knows there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done.

For the most part, the quality, service and options of the new meal plan exceed those of last year. The structure of this system has completely changed and there is much less of a corporation feel to the food that we eat daily. My question to you is: how will you help maintain that trend? How will you ensure that the meal plan continues to thrive as a cornerstone of our Jewish community on campus?
Your personal actions impact the future of your dining experience.

Barack Obama is our president-elect and will become the 44th President of the United States.
But I don't want to focus on what this means for this country, or speculate on his choices for his cabinet. There will be plenty of those stories in the coming months.
